Complex design integration of catenary-less power with CBTC & PSD. Project Cost : €550M

The Systems Engineering Management of Dubai Light Rail Transit (LRT) was very challenging as it consisted of a complex set of requirements:

  • Modern switchable catenary-less power supply on the road
  • Air-conditioned stations necessitating Platform Screen Doors (PSD)
  • The need to provide safety despite driver errors. It was impossible to provide an automated solution for vehicle protection for a Tram running in road (Urban insertion challenges)
  • Complex design integration of catenary-less power with Communication Based Train Control and PSD (CBTC/PSD Control integration)

As systems engineering manager for the turn-key solution provider, we proposed a novel concept of supervised vehicle control/operation (SVC/SVO) concept for safe LRT Urban insertion.  Our consultant led the feasibility study of a new solution and worked subsequently so that it was accepted by the signalling contractor in 2008, approved by the client/engineer (Dubai RTA) and successfully implemented in the Dubai Marina Tram, now in operation since 2014.
